Grief for Chris Berman

My condolences to Chris Berman and his children who are now without the stellar presence of his wife of over 33 years, Kathy. As many of you know, Mrs. Berman was killed in an automobile accident on Tuesday. She was a school teacher. Please pray for them as they navigate the unspeakable ocean of grief in future days.

Better Late Than Never!

Yep, state testing consumed my life for two days, and then I spent a couple of hours bringing my room back to its former decorated glory. The Lady is tired but happy.  I'll just pick the evening games that have not started at press time.

  4. Kansas City at Tampa Bay
  5. San Diego at Texas

Please, Sterling Marte, stay in shape during your suspension. You are needed.  I love Joc Pederson, Yasmani Grandal, Clayton Kershaw, et al and desperately miss the voice of the Dodgers - Vin Scully!!!!!! Play to a tie, boys. Keep the Lady happy. Play well. Even with Maeda on the hill tonight. He had a bad night a few outings ago. I hope he does well.

  2. Cleveland at Minnesota
  3. Detroit at Tampa Bay
  4. LA Angels at Houston
  5. Baltimore at Cincinnati

NBA

The Beard has a 2-0 lead in the series against former teammate Russell Westbrook. Cleveland and San Antonio take their 2-0 leads to Indiana and Memphis, respectively. The home teams will get a win and have some hope. Milwaukee could be dangerous at home, too. This would mean the lower seed is leading the series. Ah, some excitement at last!

Thursday, April 13, 2017 - I know some of my picks may defy logic, but there are some teams I do not want to win. Either they have been a perennial unfavorite or have "made the cut" in recent years. Championship Time!

How about that? An all-SEC Women's National Championship tomorrow night. I have no dog in the race since I just knew the Huskies would roll on without a defeat. Now they know how it feels to lose a game and to play a tight game. It's a good lesson. Mississippi State and South Carolina face off, and I hope it's a good game. Congratulations in advance to the winner of the game.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs face off against my UNC Tarheels on Monday night. I've been a Tarheels fan for at least twenty-five years since my tenure as a young teacher in Abilene. I just liked them for some reason and took a strong dislike to Duke down Tobacco Road. Now I have one of my favorite underdogs facing my all-time favorite NCAA Men's team (aside from my beloved Texas A&M Aggies!). I want my Tarheels to redeem themselves from last year's heartbreaking buzzer beater against Villanova. Go Tarheels! Frank Isola of Around the Horn fame is the only panelist who picked UNC in the finals to win it.

Elite Eight Time

I must confess that I am glad UCLA lost last night to Kentucky. Lonzo Ball's dad kept his name and his son's name in the press with all of that noise and ring. Now the young man will enter the draft and forfeit his college education for the NBA draft. Sigh. One and done sickens me, but I cannot control someone else's life.

March Maddens Me

I made eight brackets for ESPN's Tournament Challenge. In NONE of them did I choose Wisconsin to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. I am eating my heart out, holding my head in my hands, and generally raging like a madwoman. Argh!  Okay, rant over. Let's hope that the Florida State Seminoles manage to win against Xavier Musketeers only for the sake of my bracket. Madness Descends Soon!

Next week begins March Madness, the time of year when college basketball teams battle for supremacy. Will Villanova repeat? They broke my heart last year with the buzzer beater shot that crushed my UNC Tar Heels. Brackets get firmed up this weekend, and we'll see how things play out. Meanwhile, I think I'll enjoy championship week.

One NFL note (or two!) to report. Tony Romo will be released by the Dallas Cowboys with the caveat that he not go to an NFC East rival. I would prefer that Tony retire with his health intact. Wherever he lands must have a solid O-line to protect his increasingly fragile bones. I know he has the heart to compete; however, his body cannot guarantee the check his competitiveness is writing. Brandon Marshall signed with the NY Giants. Where will Adrian Peterson land?

Super Bowl LI

I watched the last part of Undisputed on Fox after church this morning. Shannon Sharpe is always entertaining to watch and listen to when I have the opportunity. I'd love to see him with Stephen A. Smith talking together once. It would be epic! I digress. Who to pick for the winner of the Super Bowl? I am not a Tom Brady fan, and I am not a Falcons fan, per se, but just for today, I say,

NFL Conference Championship Day!

MLB

Before we jump into the fun of the NFL Championship, a more somber tone is required.  Yordano Ventura, RHP for the Kansas City Royals, died today in a car crash in the Dominican Republic. What a tragic loss with a life cut so short! My prayers go out to his family. In an unrelated incident, former MLB player Andy Marte, also a Dominican Republic native, died in a car accident early Sunday morning. LORD, please wrap Your arms of comfort around these grieving families searching for answers and feeling a deep emptiness in their hearts.

Aaron Rodgers and the Killer Bees

NFL Divisional Playoffs

I wanted to predict both games' results correctly yesterday, but those rascally Green Bay Packers led by future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers ruined my plans. I feel nothing but pride for my Dallas Cowboys with our new QB Dak Prescott and incredible running back Ezekiel Elliott. Next year, 'Boys, next year. We will finish the fight. I was right about Pittsburgh winning last night. Those Killer Bees were just too much to handle: Big Ben, Antonio Brown, LeVeon Bell, and Chris Boswell. The kicker. Made all of the points last night. Touch down fail. ESPN writer Jeremy Fowler stated that "the Steelers were practically allergic to scoring touchdowns" in Sunday's game. Sigh. This brings me to my next point.

First Take on ESPN

I really do not want to listen to Stephen A. Smith's joy and happiness about Aaron Rodgers, the Dallas Cowboys, the Pittsburgh Steelers, or anything else for that matter; however, I will take my medicine. Yergh.

Happy New Year! - 2017 Edition

Good morning and happy new year to one and all, sports fans! Well, we have a rematch in the college football championship with the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Clemson Tigers. I was right on three out of four bowl games yesterday.

  1. LSU vs. Louisville
  2. Alabama vs. Washington
  3. Kentucky vs. Georgia Tech
  4. Ohio State University vs. Clemson

If I have my act together, I'll post my predictions for Monday's bowl games. Would you believe I have to work tomorrow and must keep up with updates for the early game via my ESPN app? It's all good.

NFL

Today is the last regular season day for the NFL. It's been a while since I made my picks public. Here they are.

  1. Baltimore at Cincinnati
  2. Houston at Tennessee
  3. Carolina at Tampa Bay
  4. Jacksonville at Indianapolis
  5. New England at Miami - I did not even think about this pick.
  6. Chicago at Minnesota
  7. Buffalo at NY Jets - No more Ryans? Perhaps, Todd Bowles will have a good day after all.
  8. Dallas at Philadelphia - I sincerely hope that Tony Romo does not take a snap during this game. It is meaningless, pointless, and dangerous. 'Nuff said. A Yellow Flag of Shame if he gets out there. An entire blanket if he gets hurt if they foolishly place him in harm's way with an Eagle defense that has nothing to lose.
  9. Cleveland at Pittsburgh - I am glad the Browns won last week. This week would not be theirs.
  10. New Orleans at Atlanta
  11. NY Giants at Washington
  12. Arizona at LA Rams - Cardinals salvage some pride and whip up on the Fisher-less Rams.
  13. Oakland at Denver
  14. Kansas City at San Diego - why did Peck's Bad Boy NEVER have the personnel needed? I love Philip Rivers, but it's another no-go season. Sigh.
  15. Seattle at San Francisco - I will NEVER pick the 49ers or any other team with Colin K. on it.
  16. Green Bay at Detroit - The Pack is back.
